Karen Calamia I don’t know what resonated to me about photography but I know I had to take pictures of my class trip to Chinatown, NYC. I was in the second grade and I took those pictures with a Kodak Brownie camera. It was vertical, not horizontal like most cameras are, and rectangular, half white “ish” on top and the bottom half was a light brown color. The negatives were huge, 120mm, but it amazed me that light cast on a film can render an image that I picked.
I believe it is a genuine curiosity and reverence for the things around us everyday that give us a touchstone, relief, joy, peace from the stress of our own lives that drives me to photograph those things. It’s living proof.
Although graduating from the School Of Visual Arts with a degree in Photography, I have ventured into other creative disciplines, theatre and music, (creative souls are like that, you know?) I have always remained active with my camera and ventured some into graphic design. I went back to the School of Visual Arts Continuing Ed program to study Greeting Card Design and Basic Graphic Design and then went on to complete a certificate program in Computer Essentials for Graphic Design at FIT.
I took my cat photography to the CFA Cat Championship show at Madison Square Garden 2006 and with much encouragement from that went on to participate in the Design Mavens Holiday Fair at FIT and The Allaire State Park Crafts Festival, and other local arts and crafts fairs.
Along with my photography I am now adding my love of design & animals by bringing my pet memorial designs and pet sympathy cards to my corner of the Galleria.
