Joy Hannan Copanezos Joy Hannan-Copanezos

Joy is a metalsmith artist who creates jewelry, sculpture and unique pieces from gold, silver and copper. Mermaids, seahorses, sun, stars and yoga inspired pieces dominate her collection of artwork at the Main Avenue Galleria.

Joy has a BFA in metalsmithing from Syracuse University. She was born and raised in New Jersey, and now resides in Nags Head on the Outer Banks of North Carolina with her husband and two children. Joy has won numerous art show awards and her work has been featured in several magazines.

“I love rocks. I picked up fossils when I was little. I just like precious stones, so when I make a piece, I design it around the stone. I had to go into metalsmithing to do that. Drawing is my totally favorite thing to do. I’ve always drawn, only now I draw with a saw blade.”

Artist Statement:

I have always been drawn to color and purity of line in my work. I love colored gemstones, mixing colors, and combining them with sterling silver and gold. I spend a lot of time drawing and redrawing a line as I envision it. Shapes, lines, and colors overlap to create a design. I am inspired by the natural world and the fantastical things I imagine exist.

Fine workmanship is as important to me as good design. I believe jewelry is wearable art. Not only should it be bought to compliment and outfit—an outfit should be bought to complement a piece of jewelry!
